.........something else i picked up this week, just got an interesting look to them

swear the 'style' is on the tip of my tongue.......but can't get there

if i had to guess i'd say in the style of something very old ? but guessing the faceted stones suggest not very?

the stones i'm guessing carnelian ?

    any thoughts or info appreciated

When I was in college, I had a boyfriend who made me a pair of opal cabochon gold earrings. He wasn't a jeweler but did have some skills. I still have the earrings.

These earrings remind me of my opals in the way the gold wraps around the red stones. Therefore, I think they're hand made. I like them a lot and the jeweler gets points for those hinges. I like that the earrings have movement.

trying to think what those bands are that run through the stones in the light

one stone is significantly darker as well

aha.....think the lines might be drilled holes, so maybe repurposed beads ?

I like them.:) They look inspired by historic jewellery, Byzantine etc.
    Ditto.
That is called a collet setting. Your earrings sound beautiful, with collet set opals.:)

Was just thinking and remember my opal earrings were not open on both sides. The opal was domed on one side, flat on the other and sat down in a gold setting. So that's probably not collet set. They're around here somewhere. The holes in my ears grew closed and I haven't had them repierced yet. 70 something looking lobes are not the same as teen age lobes so I'm a little reluctant. "Uh, can you get the little hole close to the wrinkle in my ear?"

    That is still collet set.:)
With a closed back it could be a triplet. When you find them, look at the stone from the side. Opal triplets have a transparent dome over a flat slice of opal, and a black stone of synthetic back.

They test as sterling silver and not gold unfortunately

    so like a gilded silver

will that help to get a better idea of origin etc ?

Not really.:sorry: I already assumed they were gilded silver. Whether gold or gilded silver, they still look inspired by Byzantine etc. jewellery to me.
