I may take a run to Camden tomorrow or next day, they have some nice furniture this sale, an 18th century windsor, a southern federal chest of drawers, few other items plus this little cabinet.

I just found this fun detail of an Austrian 'Bauernschrank' in a book on Austrian folk jewellery. The lady says "Ich bin eine Ibälliererin", I am a jeweller (Ibälliererin seems to be an old local word).
She also has a fan in her hand.:)

Went to see the cab today, it's the real deal, paint, hardware, iron hinges, etc but, one thing i didn't like is, the door. It does not close on the frame of cabinet as it should, it hits the edges of drawers ( which are dovetailed BTW) aprox 1 inch.
Little boo boo there by the builder & not an easy fix either as the pintles are iron & clinched to inside of cab.
I didn't notice that till today when i was standing in front of it but in 1st pic it clearly shows that.

Pity. There will be others, the same history and nice size.
Maybe even with a painting of an Ibälliererin.:D (Impossible word.)

Yeah, that's kinda a major downer there, you can't slide drawers open until you open the door of cabinet.

As i am registered, I'll take a run on this cab tomorrow but, that drawer/door thingy has taken the bloom off this little romance. I am not a big fan of "projects" with old furniture & re-hanging that door with that hardware will not be an easy task. If it's dirt cheap & no ones interested, I'll play, otherwise, I'll let the hussy go!:hilarious:
On the plus side, there are 2 old chairs, an early windsor and a 1st quarter 18th century slat back that are of interest.:)

Congratulations! I am sure that extra work will be worth it in the end, it is a very nice Bauernschrank, and a bargain.

She will be glancing at you now, instead of her distant lover.:shifty::playful:

Yeah, $200 was worth it i guess, the door/drawer thingy is painful though.
I won an 18th century walnut continuous arm windsor as well at same sale so the hussy will have a chair to sit in while i figure out how to rehang that door! :hilarious:

I forgot about the door, that's what bothered me too. Nice Windsor and the lot before it. On my list, but laid off the sale after three others this week.

Yeah, FIRST thing i noticed when i went to look, i can fix it but didn't want too. For $200. though, i'll dance with it, have no choice now!:p
I got the windsor, it's a nice chair

Meanwhile, going to pick up the hussy today and, she better BEHAVE!:p

Been doing a little research on this form, TOUGH going in a foreign language, trust me, dang foreigners! :hilarious:
I now think this form is Swiss & it appears the door when locked is SUPPOSED to keep drawers closed as well.
The form is called a Schaffreiten... which translates to "sheep free"
"A sheep free is a piece of furniture for the storage of food, which was widespread until the 19th century . Typically, there are several small drawers arranged one above the other on the left side . To the right is a large lockable compartment divided by one or more shelves. A Schaffreite is designed so that when the door is locked at the same time the drawers are blocked."

Toggenburg sheep free in delicate pastel painting, dated 1813. Bright, blue-green basic tone, with brighter door filling. Very reserved fine ornamentation with the typical rocailles. In the filling flower tendrils with Biedermeier mesh. Very distinctive furniture.

Yes! is but, i am in need of a free standing linen closet for a bath and would prefer the door/drawer be independent of one another.
Would it be a crime to rehang the hussy's door an inch or so? no food storing here so, asking for a friend?

Here is another "sheep free" cabinet from that site. This is swiss peasant/ farmer type furniture, very distinctive.
This example is similar to another in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, it depicts a man & wife on panels, C 1840s
