So far, I have found three different signatures on my inherited Limoges plates. Antiquers was very helpful about information on Elizabeth Stoner. Arnold Rhodes seems to be fairly well-documented.

But I have found no information about “J. Marsay” except s/he seems to be a prolific china painter on Limoges porcelain, with many items selling or sold online. Does anyone know his/her first name and any other information? French painter or painting elsewhere on blanks? Specific or several design studios? My plate is a painting of peaches, signed “J. Marsay,” with Blakeman & Henderson’s Limoges B&H France circle mark (I have seen the mark dated as c. 1890 & as early 1900s with no definite terminus ante quem.)

I have read that B&H were primarily exporters (American firm operating in Limoges), but also that they decorated hand painted Limoges porcelain (presumably the firm hired the designers). Did B&H hire the painters or have its own studio, or is this an extrapolation by sellers based on the quantity of B&H hand painted ware—including those by J. Marsay?

Since B&H was an exporter there can be any number of companies producing their whiteware and any number of companies supplying the decorations. Most likely, B&H contracted with one or more decorating companies in the Limoges area to produce designs that B&H believed would appeal to US consumers. This was not an uncommon arrangement and, unfortunately, it makes it very difficult to find any information on the individual decorators. Marsay was most likely an employee of one of the decorating companies. According to The Collectors Encyclopedia of Limoges Porcelain, 3rd Edition, by Mary Frank Gaston, all the known marks for B&H date to the early 1900's.

Thank you. That sounds very likely. (I think, when I was able to ID one signature & Antiquers came up with historical documentation, I had hopes that information was available on others.)
