I bought this painting today at a local thrift store. I think its supposed to be a rabbi or other known Jewish person because it came in with a lot of old torahs & other religious things?
The first pics were taken inside the house & the rest outside.
    Thank you!

How is the canvas attached to the stretcher, nails? Staples?

Can you make out the writing at the top of the back of the frame? The part that ends in "9 x 12"?

What are those oval stamps on each of the stretcher sections? A close up please :)

Frame has Ancor Bilt logo (palette) - but is also stamped hecho en Mexico?

    The 2 large letters are R M - initials for artist's name?

The rest of writing is hard to make out, but to left & onto top of R M it looks like 4 6 8 negro? (4th photo)

Abraham? These sorts of portraits regularly turned here up in Jewish houses decorated in the 60s and 70s . Some were Rabbis in full gear, and some were supposed to be historical figures.

Journey-Did you by chance get any more pics of the other Judaica that the shop got in (silver pieces) ?

Google Lensed the 1st pic, and filled 'Marlene' in as keyword. And, as usual, first I got a bunch of similar images (in this case, paintings of old bearded men) that had nothing to do with the keyword. But after scrolling down for a few secs, this painting on Mutual appeared.

Hi Journey! Were you able to find out if the artist is actually Mexican? Or maybe an expat living in Mexico?

It's possible it was painted in the United States, and the outer frame was made in Mexico, shipped in by the frame shop, as was typical to the 1980s and 90s. Did you find any date on it?

Or it's possible an ex-patriot or local Mexican painted it using the canvas frame shipped in. It appears that only the large outer frame has "Mexico" all over it and indeed it is the type of frame that would have come from Mexico back then.

Actually "Harahan" (shown) is part of the vast suburb to the west of New Orleans and rather close to the frame shop I used to buy Mexican frames back then. Custom cut to order, the trim came in lengths shipped in from Mexico. Could have been framed at Suzie Zinsel's Glass and Frame shop (she took over as solely a frame shop when Zinsel Glass Co. closed), where I used to go most often. Or perhaps at Michaels - a frame shop in the back of a large hobby supplies store. I also had one framed in downtown New Orleans with a Mexican frame but I cannot remember the name of the shop.

Although the paintings are similar, the signatures don't match at all. IMHO
