    Hi all,

I picked up a number of stud earrings, including tourmaline, topaz, peridot, etc. The below studs were with them. The two options that I could come up with are tourmalinated quartz and rutilated quartz. The colour of the linesis pushing me towards quartz. Please help? Maybe it's something completely different!

    With warmest regards,
    Adam.

Tourmalinated quartz for sure. The rutiles, i.e. needles, are tourmaline inclusions in clear quartz.

Appears to me that it is both: the black needles are tourmaline; the gold ones are the mineral rutile.

Agree. But the photos are a bit confusing to me, on the first photo the needles look like tourmaline, on the second and third photos they look like rutile.
So the question is, which photos are a better representation of the stone?

In that case I'd say tourmaline quartz, or a mix of both, as Bronwen suggested.
