I picked up this nice cup and saucer yesterday. the only question I have is about the hobbyist painting. Do you think she did this from a blank or an already patterned set?
    The gold looks very professional.

Very sweet, and painted with (near?) perfect precision.

So, you think Emily painted it all, including the gold?

I think so, the dedication is also in gold.

That is just awesome. Yes, almost perfect. If it were perfect, it probably would not be hand done.

Indistinguishable from absolute perfection, to me...
    Very Lovely, Mikey!

A labor of love/friendship...and a lot of skill. I wonder if Emily created the design or if she used a pattern book. (When we were researching my plates painted by Elizabeth Stoner, we found that she had published patterns that she created for hobbyists to use.)

I would like some input on the style (if that is the correct term). It is too early for Art deco.

Arts and Crafts did a lot of those geometrics too.

At the time that this was done, there were a LOT of hobbyist china painters out there and lots of patterns for them to choose from. This gal was pretty talented.

To me it is influenced by Jugendstil, the more linear German Art Nouveau. But Jugendstil designers interchanged ideas with Arts & Crafts designers like those from the Glasgow School of Art and the Vienna Secession.
So yes, there are elements of both Arts & Crafts and (German) Art Nouveau, that found their way to a pattern book.
