    Hi folks

    something i found in a bag in a c/s with some old music type scores (lumped together)

    they both look in pretty dire straits.....but still interesting enough

    i'm guessing an old churchy/schooly recorder, and a tin whistle

    never seen any this old looking before

    so any help with idying them would be..........tickety boo

    That sound makes the hairs on my neck (and back) stand on end.
    I used to march and drill to it.
    I could do it now, all day.

    I love the sound of bagpipes, whether Brabants/Flemish, Scottish, English, Spanish, French (and Breton) or Balkan. I probably forgot a few.
    The most elegant sounding ones are probably the Northumbrian smallpipes.

    And my father loved pipe bands. To him it was the sound of liberation, because the Canadians who liberated his town had both a (lone) piper and a pipe band.

    Found it:

    Ae Fond Kiss

    By Robert Burns
    Ae fond kiss, and then we sever;
    Ae fareweel, and then forever!
    Deep in heart-wrung tears I'll pledge thee,
    Warring sighs and groans I'll wage thee.

    Who shall say that Fortune grieves him,
    While the star of hope she leaves him?
    Me, nae cheerfu' twinkle lights me;
    Dark despair around benights me.

    I'll ne'er blame my partial fancy,
    Naething could resist my Nancy;
    But to see her was to love her;
    Love but her, and love forever.

    Had we never lov'd sae kindly,
    Had we never lov'd sae blindly,
    Never met—or never parted—
    We had ne'er been broken-hearted.

    Fare thee weel, thou first and fairest!
    Fare thee weel, thou best and dearest!
    Thine be ilka joy and treasure,
    Peace. enjoyment, love, and pleasure!

    Ae fond kiss, and then we sever;
    Ae fareweel, alas, forever!
    Deep in heart-wrung tears I'll pledge thee,
    Warring sighs and groans I'll wage thee!

    We saw the Silk Road Ensemble a few years ago, and Cristina Pato played a Galician bagpipe called the Gaita (Celtic-Iberian)-the whole experience was sublime !
    But I'll never think of bagpipes the same way again after hearing Pato's Spanish pipes-incredible.
    One of the best musical experiences we've ever had.

    My brother has a gaita and plays it occasionally. He plays mainly Scottish tunes though.;)

    The wooden one does look like a type of "chanter", perhaps a practice one, used to learn without the bag and drones.

    I was once in Fort William, Scotland, when the pipers marched through town before some highland games. The sound echoed off the hills, and my Scots-Irish ancestry seemed to vibrate in response saying - this is where I belong!

    I know the feeling, having been in Scotland so many times visiting family. And until recently I didn't even know I had Insular Celtic ancestors, as well as Continental Celtic (Breton, also bagpipe country).
    I must have bagpipe music flowing through my veins, because I always get emotional.
