Larger than most I have seen, but the technique and materials look right for Makah/Nootka. We (@komokwa) might be able to say more with a view of the bottom. Have you bought this, or just asking for opinions?

Nice large knob-top basket, either Makah or Nuu-Chah-Nulth (Nootka). A photo of the bottom might help decide which. Hard to date, as they fade very rapidly if exposed to sun, very slowly if kept out of the sun. Yours is a bit faded, but the inside will show the original vibrant colors.
The earliest designs were geometric, with the figural such as ducks and canoes coming a bit later (around 1910-20 perhaps), as the weavers discovered that the buyers liked the ducks.

Yup , a little tour de force here.
As 2mb & now all fakes say , the bottom is key , but with the flat cedar bands used around the outside , coupled with the elongated knob top and whaling scene ... says it's a Makah basket from North West Washington State.
( traditionally , the Nootka used cedar root for the warp , & the Makah used flat cedar bark..)
Larger than most for it's time , which I'd say was circa 1910 , give or take 5 years.

( baskets of this type were mostly geometrics in the colourful dyed grass designs before 1900 , & after that started showing more animals , and whaling scenes , and boats and flags , as the tourist market heated up and called for a more European look that Whites would enjoy.. )

It looks like the string is attached to a handle , which the basket is sitting on , and along with it's size , makes this basket unusual for it's age.
The far left side of the lid , looks to have some broken cedar fibres , which may indicate other scuffing or breaks which are not visible here.

Still, finding this , I'd be hard pressed to walk away from it.... at the right price !

Offer $250, or ask if they ever do trades, or partial trades plus cash, and use it as an opportunity to get rid of something you like less.
