Hi all, I picked this up at my favorite thrift today
The black frame with dark green felt is 9" x 9 1/2".
    The portrait behind domed glass is 2 1/2" x 3 1/2"
When I was taking pics of this to show you, look what I saw when photographing his headshot.
any and all thoughts appreciated. The artist must have signed with the head of a pin, it is so small

Celluloid or similar, I think, based on the regularity, perfect parallel spacing of the lines.

    Could it be George Romney?

The original was painted in 1826 by Simplicio Rodriques de Sá. Romney died in 1802. Appears to be a modern copy of a painting widely reproduced in miniature.

here is the back. I thought it might be an older portrait with a new framing job. pretty elaborate with the glass, brass, and velvet trim.

No, don't think it's terribly old. There was a period when these decorative miniatures were all the fashion. If it were older, I'd expect the execution to be not so sketchy and quickly done.

That type of celluloid is also called French Ivory but you can't say that any more on Ebay because the bots only focus on the word Ivory and ban your item.

I've never had someone swear at me on this forum before lol.
I sold it yesterday to my neighbor for $20. I only paid 3.

No, but if you go to the Cameos Show & Tell thread, you will see that you can sell ivory, call it lava, & eB is just fine with it. So, 'French lava'. :joyful:

It was rare that she did, but whenever my mother would use so much as a single d*mn, she would immediately follow it with "Pardon my French."

I don't have a photo of a little piece I have, but used to see many like it, & I suspect there's some connection of time/place/ maker with Mikey's item. I remember I bought mine from a seller in South America. It was similar to this one, although a different Raphael Madonna, & not such a 'piano key' arrangement of the surround:

Mine no longer has any kind of label, but the one above:

    upload_2026-1-1_16-54-26.png

The back of mine has a panel covered in a brocade cloth, with a folding brass easel & a suspension loop. A decorator object, but well made.

I did show detail of mine on the forum once, as a cautionary tale. The Celluloid has been painted to give the appearance of the natural grain of ivory when it is cut lengthwise:

This is what happens when you splash coffee on it:

*$(%)_@)_why just the fact that Bronwen used such a clump of dingbats caused me to splash coffee all over my *$(%)_@)_ keyboard !!!
