Think they also get something about precious metals. My memory says that someone once told me that they were taking a GIA course on pearls, but you know how memory is. We had a go at one particular seller who was his own appraiser:

But shell, lava, certainly 'dripstone' & often coral are outside their ken. Not sure they're all that reliable for differentiating stone from glass. Now that it has been so long since ivory has been strictly limited, they probably don't get any training in that either.

A plain old electronic gem tester would sort out the glass, but I'm not sure about dripstone .. whatever it is.

Yea, so did I but never got an email about the outcome. The only way I know the item was taken down was because I went to the item page and it said something like "This item is no longer available."

Routinely mistaken for lava. I love how one thing has led to another as I have learned about cameos. I did not know the name Reverchon until I saw it on a dripstone piece. It did not click in immediately, but was eventually able to work out the faint inscription on the back of the Perseus cameo because the name was tucked away in my mind. Then, of course, it became easier to recognize others.

Weird how that works. Learning to read bad handwriting has its uses. Old age and cunning (and ability to read cursive) for the win.

Were you "signed in" to eBay when you submitted the report?

I was signed in to eBay, yes, so maybe they recognized the device/URL the report form was sent from, even though I was not reporting the item as the purchaser & did not locate the link for the form on the main site. Good point. :) Still, kind of creepy. :(
