One thing to try to keep in mind (and it's tough), but impossibly enough-the excellent to really sublime historical miniaturists were able to render tiny pieces of art equal to the incredible quality of their full-sized work.
Beware of any kind of slap-dash 'blobby' lace, medals, earrings, etc.

Think it is S. Guerou, or that's what I think I see, & when I searched there were others who thought so too. We may all be wrong.

This one has already made it into search results.

That's a game-playing website with imaginary period characters. The person(s) who made the website just grabbed random photos off the internet to use to illustrate the imaginary characters, and made up some names.

I think the artist is S. Guérou, the S being written in an old-fashioned way.
A box with an S. Guérou painting:

    (French auctioneer states 20th century.)
I agree with the penciled writing on the back being "f. au bolero" for femme au bolero... woman in a short jacket, LOL.

This looks like some type of faux ivory to me, a Celluloid sort of material.

The grain is not like ivory either. It looks like wood more than anything, except the color & translucency are more in keeping with an artificial material. There were a number of competitors in the faux ivoire marketplace. A genuine original miniature watercolor portrait might well have been done on actual ivory.

Maybe done with one of those faux woodgrain stamps you find in DIY stores?

She has had a few amazing finds though, and she can get a refund for this one and buy something else.:)

The only way you'd get your money back by selling it is misrepresenting it to someone else. I'd say it's iffy enough to get a refund. It's a tricky genre.
