Hello everyone, I was looking around estate sales online and came across this pair of hand painted vases. Any ideas on the maker? IMG_7957.jpeg IMG_7958.jpeg IMG_7959.jpeg
I saw a similar one at auction about a month ago marked Limoges but I can’t find pics of it…

Pretty and nicely painted, but useless as vases now. You could always use them as lamps since someone already drilled the holes?

The mark is for Bawo and Dotter and dates to the 1880's. I don't usually see much Limoges that old. It's a decorator mark as Bawo and Dotter didn't begin producing their own china until 1896. Before 1896 they decorated blanks produced by other Limoges companies. Nice find.

Going by this, the OP's weren't necessarily decorated by Bawo and Dotter, right?

That could be true, but most likely B and D, and Limoges certainly?

True, my bad, I made a jump there I shouldn't have made based on a perceived similiarity in decoration. Most likely all three were decorated by B & D but not necessarily. I think we are safe in assuming all three are Limoges.

The book is clearer on this second point. The Collector's Encyclopedia of Limoges Porcelain on pg. 28 reads, "Bawo and Dotter was established in the 1860's in New York City for the purpose of importing china, notably Limoges porcelain for the American consumer. The firm set up its own decorating studio in Limoges during the 1870s which was named The Elite Works. The company did not begin manufacturing its own china until 1896 (d'Albis and Romanet, p. 126). From the 1870s through the 1890s, the company decorated the white ware made by other Limoges factories. Many examples of Bawo and Dotter's decoration and porcelain are found in a variety of items."

It’s strange that I can’t find another example of this shape but somehow three get auctioned off weeks from each other in different parts of the country lol

Very finely done. Doubt that you will pin down the maker but my guess is German or Austrian
