(Should I have put this is the metal ware forum instead of here?)

I know this vase is Japanese, and think it may be Meiji period, but not sure? I haven't found too many pieces online that have fewer design elements the way this one does.

I can see the cloisonne wires, but they're very dark. I assume they're tarnished? Would it make sense to try to polish them with a jeweler's cloth, or could that harm the enamel?

Any thoughts on age, origin, etc., would be very welcome. Nothing I saw in eBay completeds was close enough in style for me to get a feel for how to price the vase, so if anyone has a hunch about what price might work, I'd appreciate it.

    Thanks! :)

    That is similar... thanks, Scout.

I wonder if the seller could actually get that much, or somewhat close with Best Offer?

    You can always try!

Probably helpful to find more comparables...

One thing I suggested to GaleriaGila was to look into getting a verbal appraisal - get a large enough group together and pay for a couple hours of their time, while you take notes. Then you won't have to start from scratch.

People often request them for equal distribution of heirlooms and such they want to leave to their relatives. It's much less than a written appraisal - if your mother has a lot of stuff and it's as nice as this, it seems worth it.

Just this piece (if it sold!) at $350 is enough to pay for over two hours with a company I work for here in LA.

That's a thought for my better items, Scout.

I have a feeling the seller is being overly optimistic, but maybe they're figuring they'd accept a more moderate offer.

I see four vases in solds that are similar, with dragons in shield shapes, though they all have designs that are a lot more busy. The sold prices ranged from about $37 to $99.

Are you sure it is not Cantonese?

The trouble with looking at other people's examples is that they are not always correct in their attributions.

No, it is Japanese for sure and indeed around 1900, nice, but not especially rare. I would not pay the price asked in the offer above...

I like the simplicity of yours.

Mat: How can you tell it's Japanese?

Including Pat's, also? What does the difference in detail mean, if anything?

It is the decoration that is typical for Japanese Cloisonne. The difference to the other vase is not important, I think the two vases are very similar. Pat, what is the size of your vase?
I think the a price up to 100 $ (if it is in perfect condition) is really more realistic.
Here is a link to a site about Chinese and Japanese cloisonne, just to see the differences in style: https://web.archive.org/web/20140102161143/http://idcloisonne.com/

Thanks, Mat. I think I'd used that site before, but had forgotten about it. Everything I've seen previously did indicate that it's Japanese.

My vase is about 7-1/4" tall. There are a few places where there's a very small amount of enamel loss so it's not perfect.

I vote for Japanese too. The Chinese would have used different motifs. If that was mine I'd listed it at $49.99 auction style.

Thanks, Kard. I'm thinking along the same lines, but possibly a higher-priced fixed price listing with Best Offer.
