    thanks all! so it is safe to say that it was a basic/mid range violin in the 1860's if the label is authentic? What does the bow make possibly more valuable than the violin? I added a photo of it in the album, there is no name on the bow. cheers, Mark

    It's likely that the age of the wood will have a positive contribution towards its tone. It would have to be of quality construction to maximise the benefit of this though, to ensure resonance. Do you play yourself?

    It always amazes me how people play fretless instruments. Nothing to guide you other than touch and your ear.

    She'd darned good, either a professional or someone who could have been. The violin sounded like one any professional would be happy to use now.

    Some old bows can indeed be worth a lot of money. I've seen bows from fine makers sell for as much as a car.

    Best get a pro to play it. I play guitar and keys myself but I'm sure I'd make a strad sound like a wailing banshee

    oh yes, that is what I meant, i gave it a shot and it does appear to have a powerful and deep sound, when you listen through the terrible screeches : ))

    @mark peters
    When you say you added a photo to the album, did you mean the gallery ?
    No one looks in the gallery
    I snatched two pictures you put in there, I reduced the size to under 1mb
    and posted them below.
    Always put your pics as a "Upload a File" with your post.

    You can add up to 8 photos on each post. Use a photo resizer to make them under 1mb. I use one called 'Photo & picture resizer'.

    before setting up and playing you wanna check to see if the soundpost is still there and in position

    you should be able to see it in one side of the sound holes (a quick google should explain it easier)

    Just to add, a soundpost looks like a long wooden dowel.
