Featured Elephant head cane - wood head? Age?

I found this elephant head cane at my regular thrift store Friday! I did an image search but haven't been able to find another one - similar ones, but not the same - could it be handmade?
Also what is it made of? It looks like wood where it's worn a bit, like the tip of 1 ear and the top edge of the flat, back of the elephant head/handle; that looks like wood under the brown color?
I thought wood, but it is so smooth feeling, almost like plastic or ceramic?
Has anyone seen this handle before? How old is it?

Brown derby elephant head on black maple shaft. A unique walking cane perfect for republicans.(??)

 

If I were gonna list it, an' in spite of my own (liberal) political persuasion, there would be no mention of GOP symbolism...period.
Plenty of folks find pachyderms sufficient unto themselves for admiration an' devotion...no few of them are offended at that ancient association an' all it connotes!

 

Lens came up with canes/walking sticks in a general sense. I added "elephant" in the follow-up and it resulted in a much better list.
