Featured Marbles - Do I try to sell them or give them to my Grandson for play.

I am finally feeling like I can get out more. No more treatments for a while. I went grocery shopping by myself last week and decided to stop at the local secondhand shop. I went to the toy dept. to see if there were any Barbie clothes for my granddaughter. I saw this bag of marbles there and bought them because they were only $1. I know absolutely nothing about marbles. I am not looking for a price on them. I just thought someone could tell me if I should try to sell them or should I just give them to my grandson to play with. I tried to separate them by color. Hope that helps. marbles2.jpg marbles3.jpg marbles4.jpg

Hard to get more Bang for the Buck than the delight of a precious child with a new bag of marbles...for a Buck!

My grandson wanted them. He is 8 years old. I do not think he cares how much they are worth but his Mother just said he could not have them. Oh well. I will put them in a clear vase. They are pretty.

I have mine in an eccentric glass box from a craft show. Most are just cat's eyes I picked up because they were cheap, pretty & reminded me of my childhood, when I can remember packets of five coming as a premium in some kind of breakfast cereal. I also have a few that were given to me by a family friend when I was a young child. He was probably closer in age to my grandparents than to my parents, & I think they had been his when a boy.

Last I looked, there was quite a lot on line about marbles from the collecting community.

Ha ha. You do know how overprotective parents are nowadays. He is 8. I would think he would know better than to put them in his mouth.

They are very pretty and we also played with them when we were young. My brother was the reigning champion. Since my mother bought them for us, I assume she didn't think we would hurt ourselves with them.

Even if he did, at that age unlikely to choke, just pass them on through without incident.

    Marbles?

I have more marbles than you would ever need :D

I have this large graduated glass jar full of marbles, it weighs over 33lbs (15kg)
It sits on my window sill, when the sun shines through it, the spectral colours are amazing.

The others I have obtained are spread amongst the gravel stones in my garden.

There used to be a website called Land of Marbles. Those guys were great. They'd help ID marbles and they were passionate about collecting. You'd be surprised at what was valuable and what wasn't. Collectors want marbles that have shiny, unpitted surfaces. 99% of marbles we get have small dings that you need a magnifying glass to see. If they've been held together as most are, they bang into each other. If it's a really valuable marble, it's acceptable to have it polished as long as you let the collector know. I've never had any valuable ones, but they're all interesting.
