This pen drawing with wash, 19,5 cm X 32,0 cm, shows Diana and her hunting party. Unsigned. Probably Netherlandish, 17th century.

    Who's the artist ? Any idea ?

Apparently Diana with her nymphs & Silenus was a thing, but not seeing this version right off.

It comes up on Mutual Art as "Dutch school" and 17th century. Is that the work you posted?

Yes Debora. I bought it two days ago at an Internet auction.

Thanks architrave. I just found out. Was Rubens inspired by the drawing or was the draughtsman inspired by Rubens ?

Thanks again architrave. The right hand side of the drawing is puzzling. Did the painting originally comprise that too and was it cut off or lost at some time, so the drawing is the only evidence of what was once there ?

The title of the painting, as it is now, describes the scene as Diana and her nymphs departing for the hunt, while the drawing, with that huge pile of dead game, would be Diana. et al., returning from the hunt. It does look to me more like they are gathering & preparing to set out, leaving some other forest residents to their own activities, rather than coming home. The rest of the drawing strikes me more as an exercise in anatomical drawing & perspective.

Might be a preparatory drawing for an engraving. Try reversing the image and searching.

Before or after an engraving. That's the question ? And who's the artist ?

That figure is more exaggerated in the drawing. In the painting it looks like any old satyr. In the drawing it looks more like Pan himself.

Yes there are differences between painting and drawing. And where does the right hand side of the drawing come from ?

I can't find any mention of it being cut down. It's actually the left hand side of the painting that looks like it might have been trimmed slightly.

The drawing is sufficiently well done to suspect that he or she must have made more drawings than this one. Maybe even signed ones. And where are they ?
