Featured Is this sapphire pendant Art Deco or a revival piece?

Hi all! Picked up this pendant at auction recently, it was on a modern silver tone chain but I thought the pendant looked older (rather than the whole necklace being a more modern revival piece). When I tested the stone with my Presidium it's coming up as sapphire (woohoo!). The odd thing is, I have tested it for platinum, gold and silver and all acids seem to be eating through the scratches. I will have to test again but any idea why? would rhodium plating cause this? The only markings are some hand scratched numbers, maybe from the jeweler? Do you think it is Edwardian-1920s or it is it likely newer? I even thought it could have been part of an earring at one point. The pendant is 1.4"L, the sapphire is 0.5"L x 0.4"W. All info appreciated, thank you!

Could well be plated! I guess I assumed it wouldn't be base metal with a nice sapphire especially if a little older but it may be more modern and indeed plated.

Synthetic sapphires have been available since 1902.

Very pretty, but the lines of the outer 'rim' are not as angular and defined as on period pieces.
My guess is a repro from Thailand. The Thai make a lot of very attractive Western period repros, although they would use white gold for a piece like this.
They use natural as well as synthetic stones

I would have the bail replaced, this one doesn't look very safe and a pendant like this should have a nice closed bail.

Thanks! It's strange it isn't marked. I'll have to test it again.

A sapphire that big and that color, if natural, would be in a high-karat or platinum setting and cost a bomb. With lab-created sapphire, all bets are off. It's trying hard to be the openwork that was popular right before Deco took off in the USA, but doesn't quite get there.
