My grandma had this sitting on her table filled with chocolates and after admiring the fine detail she just handed it to me and said “it’s yours!” So so sweet! But now I’m transfixed by it and need to know *roughly* how old it is!

    Interesting details (to me)
    • The entire edge is scalloped but there is an asymmetrical split where they are concave on about one half and then convex on the other.
    • Each scallop panel is painted with a different pattern than the one next to it with the exception of choice motifs sometimes crossing borders.
    • TEXTURE!! Omg it’s so lovely. Every panel feels different depending on the pattern painted. The straight blue panel is smooth porcelain which is nice to compare to all the other detail that is raised and seems to be hand painted?

    Welcome Billy.
It is all hand painted. The blue is underglaze painted, the other colours sit on top of the glaze, which is why you feel the difference in texture.

I will tag someone who can tell you more about your lovely dish: @916Bulldogs123 .:)

Everything rings true with imari but the mark on the base looks chinese to me.

Oh and also the pattern on it looks like a fusion of imari decor and satsuma moriage. I'm not sure if these two styles would have genuinely come together in one piece like this.

Quick point Billy If you use the gallery to upload photos, you will soon run out of space. To upload direct to the forum, just use a resizing app/program to make the photos small enough. I use 'photoresizer'.

    Thanks for the tags.
I think early Meiji or late Edo. 1860-1880.
Hard to see the mark, but you might have a look on Gotheborg in the Arita section.
    Pretty plate.
