Featured Plese help identify this carved, horned figure

Discussion in 'Tribal Art' started by Kelly Graziano, Mar 11, 2026.

  1. I found this in a thrift store near Palm Springs. It measures 6" tall, weighs 4 oz. It has mother of pearl set into the wood. Long horns sweeping back from the forehead and a long face with almond shaped eyes and an open mouth.

I can't tell if it's African or Oceanic. Also, is it supposed to represent an animal? An Ibis maybe?

I'm interested in age, value, where it was made and what it represents.

Thanks in advance for all your help!

Overall the body looks human to me, although I can't quite make out what's going on with the feet, so strikes me as a person in a mask, or a werewolf sort of creature.

  5. This is so interesting. The hands and fingers are defined, but the feet are flat and hoof like. Also, the figure has a tail -- visible in the back view. I don't think it's a dog, or a human. What are your thoughts?

  10. How fascinating. Your carving is amazing. The mother of pearl discs are the same. I thought of ebony at first but was concerned because the grain was so visible in the very bright light of the california desert. To the naked eye it looks black. Thank you for sharing!

& thanks again.....cuz I used to have a nice , if not large Oceanic collection years ago ....that I have little left of ... so it was fun to reacquaint myself with the images and terms , that I once knew offhand !!!
