I remember 25 or so years ago buying shows were springing up all over.

My financial advisor worked with several older couples in the same Independent Living place where my mother lived. She said a bunch of the older ladies went to sell their gold at one of the buying shows. It broke her heart, they were selling antique and Tiffany pieces thinking they got a deal, they didn't get there is more to valuing a piece than just the melt price :sorry:

Not good at all. I hate to see dealers taking advantage, particularly of elderly customers. I always offer a fair price. And when an item is not of interest unless it is very cheap (because I don't typically buy that type of item and so it's a punt for me), I'll always be very transparent and tell the seller that the item is worth much more, that they would be better to try with other dealers or to sell privately, but this is what I'm willing to offer. It's then up to them, but at least they have the facts to hand and can make an informed decision.

Some are so hardened off that they don't even feel it. I buy as cheaply as I can, hunting for mistakes where someone else set the price (estate sales, rummage sales, antique stores etc). But dishonorable conduct is always wrong.

Went on a house call 2 weeks ago. A woman inherited her parents' house and wanted to sell the costume jewelry.

I made an offer, she accepted. Yesterday I did a deep dive in it all (there is lots) and decided I should have offered more. This morning I mailed off a check to her.

I am a firm believer in karma and know something good will come my way because I treated this woman fairly :)
