Yes, and frustrating because, in his era, a viewer would have easily been able to identify his pastime by his costume. Wonder if he was a cyclist.

I wondered the same. The studio setting suggests some sort of activity in the countryside. There is a rock and what looks like a jetty, but those don't combine well for a single activity like rock climbing or canoeing. When cycling outdoors you could encounter both.

 

the shoes are not baseball....& I thought maybe cyclist as well.....

 

I believe the pose is indoor and set up !
