    Hi everyone,

I recently purchased this bracelet described as Victorian (circa 1890), and I’m trying to better understand its true age.

It appears to be high carat gilt over brass, has some weight to it, and features repeating engraved rectangular links with ring connectors and a box clasp.

I would really appreciate any thoughts on whether this looks truly Victorian (pre-1901) or more likely early 1900s/Edwardian or even later.

Thank you so much for your help! IMG_4689.jpeg IMG_4688.jpeg

I don’t see any markings at all — no hallmarks or stamps on the clasp or panels. The seller described it as circa 1890 and “high carat gold gilt.”

Hello Debora, I actually do not see any marks at all. The seller only indicated circa 1890 and mentioned that it’s
Thank you so much — this is really helpful! I’ll take a closer look, and the construction does look quite similar to mine.

The one in that article, despite being described by the author as "worn in the 1900s" actually has a patent date stamped on it: August [number] 1880. So at least that one, which looks quite like yours, could be 1880s.

Thank you! I looked at the article and it does look very similar — especially in the design. Definitely helpful for comparison, I appreciate it.

"Late Victorian" would probably cover it.

It's a classic book chain, if nothing else. The design was made clear into the 1950s. I think they were always some form of costume jewelry. The clasp on this could easily be pre-WWI. Whether 1910 or 1890 I have no clue.

Thank you both — I really appreciate your insights. The late Victorian/book chain identification makes sense, and the note about the clasp possibly being pre-WWI is especially helpful. I can see how this style carried on later, which makes dating a bit tricky. Thanks again for your help!
