Trio of lidded baskets

I rarely look on the basket shelf at this particular thrift but as I walked by I saw these three peeking out of a larger basket and they caught my eye - where are these from? I'm guessing they are native american - but that is from my naive standpoint. Thanks for taking a look!

Basket 1: (basket's 2 and 3 I'll post each in their own comment)
This is the smallest one at 3.5" high with the lid on. About 4" in diameter at the widest point.

 

The next one is oblong at about 5.25" long and about 3" wide. About the same height as the first one at 3.5" high:

 

And the last one is the biggest 5.5" in diameter at the widest point, and about 5" high.

 

I got nuthin......cept they're not that old..

 

Yeah they don't seem all that old to me - I figure younger than 40 years - maybe much younger but what do I know. They looked and felt well made enough to snatch up for cheap.

 

Nice....but 4 me , well made is something much different.....

My brother recently brought some of those home from his travels. South America for sure. Panama maybe? Those @ above will know.

I believe they are a type of basket called a hösig di, made by the Wounaan and Embera Indians of eastern Panama and northern Colombia. According to Darien Rainforest Basketry: Baskets of the Wounaan and Embera Indians from the Darien Rainforest of Panama, by Margo M. Callaghan, these little baskets are made of chunga, a fiber from the black palm tree. Traditionally they were used to keep small valuables, and were usually undecorated, just the plain light color of the chunga. Beginning in the 1980s, however, various people began to encourage the Wounaan and Embera to make baskets for sale, and they have become very skilled at producing much larger and highly decorated baskets that command significant prices.

So maybe these pre-date 1980's decorative trend as mentioned, or maybe they're newer but just more utilitarian. They are extremely tightly woven and sturdy. Either way - great to know where they are from! Thanks again @2manybooks
