I recently won this. It shouldn't be impossible to figure out who Arthur is, because his partner is either Herman or Merrill. It seems like he might have been Lancaster's agent or manager.

I don't know much about Lancaster.

    Any ideas?

I can't read the note without doing a Burt Lancaster impression in my mind.

Herman should be Herman Hecht, Lancaster's agent and producing partner. At the Venice Film Festival, Lancaster won the Best Actor award for his role in Birdman of Alcatraz. He attended the ceremony which was held from August 25 to September 8. Bet that was what the congratulatory wire was for. And he may have well traveled to Palermo after. Ah, yes. He was in Palermo filming Visconti's The Leopard.

Lancaster made "The train" in 1964, only two years later. The initial director was Arthur Penn, but Lancaster fired him after three or four days and John Fraankenheimer took over. If the reference is to Arthur Penn, I have no idea who Herman or Merrill are. It's a real long-shot. Arthur is not a particularly uncommon name.
