The only place where the clay can be seen is near the signature, through 3 small chips where the apparent slip finish is missing. The interior is also covered entirely. Careful examination of the pattern, a near-hypnotic grid, shows evidence of being hand-inked; the red at the top an' bottom is applied over the grid, and in the spirals they are applied as discrete dots, mostly circular as if perhaps stamped...but many are obviously less round and/or unevenly dense, not completely opaque. The black dots in the spirals are similarly round, carefully placed to cover the space within each square an' not intrude into adjacent areas. The overall impression is of meticulous effort, repeated many hundreds of times...impressive, to me.

The vase weighs 35 ounces, an' is 13 1/2 inches high; major diameter is ~4 1/2 inches, mouth-rim is 1 3/4 inches outer diameter, the bottom is 3 inches diameter an' very slightly concave. The signature is in pencil.

I would have posted this in Tribal, but I'm uncertain about it.
What can y'all say? Thanks for lookin'!

Try "Manuel L. Olivas" of Mata Ortiz pottery.

Tha shape is not a traditional one for Mata Ortiz, but the painting style is. And 'traditional' for Mata Ortiz is pretty young at 50 years and always changing.

Thanks, Debora...someone awhile ago mentioned Mata Ortiz, but without conviction...I regret not following that up.

I've found many others my Manuel, mostly on eBay. The prices are widely variable, an' I cannot discern from the shapes or design of them what accounts for that variability. Given that mine is a 'non-traditional' shape, I'm left without a clear understanding of whether it is anything of significant value.
I'm much better informed about its origin an' history, an' am very grateful for all the helpful comments...Thanks!

The prices are widely variable. Odd that. Hard to identify where collector interest lies.

The only way to find out, of course, is to list it an' see where it goes. I suspect there are few enough folks that would have active interest that an auction wouldn't be the way to start. I'll chew on it, do some more sleuthing, wait for some clarity to establish a reasonable buy-it-now figure. Thanks, Debora.

I amend my description of the foundation finish; it isn't slip-glazed but painted, I think. The 3 chips on the bottom are not how slip wears or fails, at least as far as I know. I have a few pieces of SW an' Mexican pottery with slip finishes, none with hard, ragged-edged chips like those.
