I read a lot of information online about how to ID old candlesticks, but without any experience, I am still unable to figure out if this candlestick is old, or not.
Unfortunately there is only 1 stick, and it seems to be missing the top piece, but I would still like to learn this, for future knowledge, pretty please!:)
The underside seems to be finished nicely, with the same color brass, and it is smooth, so I thought that was one clue that it could be old, or older. The brass also seems to be a better quality than many other brass items that I have been familiar with (does that make sense?). Another thing I read about was about being turned on a lathe...but how would I know if this was turned on a lathe? What would it look like? Any thoughts and assistance are very appreciated, thank you.
    It's 5" high.

That one appears to be sand cast. The shape is unusual, rather like a cannon.

Brass candlesticks are about the cheapest 18th C antique you can buy. This is because almost no one knows old from newish.

This just has the right feel to be an old one. The quality of the cast, fineness of the details, and obvious signs of age are the signs.

I've seen 18th C ones for a mere few dollars. Mad, innit.

Thanks Af, Silverthwait, Brad & Bear!
With the tip from Af about sand cast, I found a similar style. It's not the same but has similarities.

Also found another similarity done in silver by Matthew Boulton c. 1808

Brad thanks for your reply. I suspected it was better quality than others I've seen/handled, but again with no experience in handling old vs. new, I just wasn't sure.
I'm learning! That's wonderful! A while back I remember reading a thread here on Antiquers about old brass candlesticks, and ever since then I've been picking them up everywhere I see them. This one just felt different, so I had to investigate...
Thanks again everyone, your help is appreciated.:)

Before all of the "wise owls" came forth with their superb wisdom, I was looking at the pictures (my Mom had a thing for candlesticks too!) and thought they had a 'look' of the 1700's!!!! Nice to know my mind was somewhere near correct!!!!! And let me tell you, one has to get up pretty early in the morning to be one of the first ones on this board.....however they do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:banhappy::banhappy::banhappy::banhappy::banhappy::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::p:D:p:D:p:D:p:D

LOL! Yes I'm pretty sure Af, is in the UK, across the pond.
Aquitaine, I sometimes think I know something on this board, and I keep my mouth (or fingers) shut, and wait for others to chime in to see if I'm right, and I get sooooo happy when I am right about it, but it doesn't happen all the time.... everything I do know, and have learned.... has come from this board and its members...:kiss::kiss: Thanks to all of you.
