I found this at a rummage sale near Portland. Measures approx 13" by 19" (33x48cm). The lighter wood in the places of damage might indicate that it was stained.

The signed name seems to be Boadella.

My guesses are that it's Catholic and perhaps Mexican, but I don't know.

Any help and comments will be appreciated. Thanks as always.

Try B. Adella It may be the small circle after the B could be a period.

EDIT: I don't think its religious. The scowl and suspicious eyes makes me think a general woodcarving / Art

Interesting. Same signature but different medium and quite a different subject.

The person in the carving seems to be wearing a veil, which I usually associate with a woman.

Another thing that comes to mind is the wear on the face looks artificial to me. I mean.... what would you be doing to that to cause that much wear on the face? BWDIK?
Unless it was done that way purposely by the artist for contrast.

Now I'm looking at it again and wondering if it's not more Tribal than religious. Could be some tribal Chief or something.

Don't think that's a veil. It is believed that, as a Jew, Jesus would have wore a gown and a tallit. Here he's depicted with the latter wrapped around his shoulders.

Google lens brings up tribal images, but in hand it looks much more religious to me. The hooded eyes have a real negative vibe.... plenty of reasons possible for that I suppose.

Could be a Mater Dolorosa (Sorrowing Mother), Mary mourning the suffering and death of Christ. I agree that the exaggerated frown is atypical, maybe a modern version of a traditional theme. Traditionally, she would have tears and sometimes a halo.

Probably part of diptych with Christ as Man of Sorrows.

Could be. It is certainly a Mary figure, not Christ. Whether as Mater Dolorosa or a younger Mary (her clothing) I don't know.
She has long hair and wears a head veil, the way the younger Virgin Mary is often depicted.

The carving looks a lot like Spanish souvenir carvings btw, I wonder if there is a link.
