I know it's a dagger but I don't know where it's from our house old it is. It's made of metal and is approximately 20 cm long. It's handle depicts monkeys dressed in weird clothes and the blade has markings in the shape of a monkey on one side and an owl or bird like animal on the other. It was given to me by my late great grandfather who served in ww2 in places such as Egypt, France and of course England, where we are from. Any information you might have would be a great help. Thank you. Dagger by Phil cresswell posted Feb 27, 2016 at 9:59 AM
To me it looks like a tourist item, the shape and decoration on the handle would serve no useful purpose if used as a weapon.
Possibly Chinese. This is the Year of the Monkey, so if you decide to sell, you should do well. The Year of the Monkey also occurred in 1944, and 1956. Was G. Granddad in Asia during that time?
Hi Phil - welcome! Not that it matters so much but that's not a dagger - daggers are meant to slide in and out easily so the sides would be symmetrical: this looks more like a small saber or Arabian style scimitar. It sounds interesting, but I can't really satisfy my curiosity as the image is rather dark.
Thank you all for the help. I know it wasn't a dagger used in battle but I wanted to know if it was of African origin or somewhere else, the monkeys on the handle made me think africa was the place of origin however the monkey and bird markings on the blade looked to be of Asian origin. I wouldn't dream of selling something that my great grandfather owned as it reminds me of him whenever I look at it, now it sits in my coin cupboard wrapped in a blanket so that I may pass it down to my children or, Odin willing, my great grandchildren.
no , mixed metals....from what i can see. Oh....and phil said it's made of metal....in his 2nd sentence..... maybe that was invisible also.....
most be my monitor sorry I did read the metal but the image seemed to be a soft green colour. Must get a better laptop! thanks
