This crest is on an 1820’s London box lid. Don’t imagine anyone’s seen it or knows who it may belong to? IMG_1174.jpeg IMG_1172.jpeg IMG_1173.jpeg

    edit: spelling

Well there seem to be 2 separate marks -- the lion rampant and whatever that thing is on the left. Not a complete crest IMO.

Don't you mean passant? Or more fully, a lion passant guardant crowned?

I have to imagine the person that had their crest put on their box got it to their satisfaction. Probably many times on small objects you can’t put a literal full crest but they get the main aspects.

Edit: the left section appears to be two lions heads on plinths. This family really identified with lions. Unless I’m seeing it all wrong.

The internet identifies the animal on the left as "a leopard's head erased pellety collared chained and ringed" and as a crest belonging to the Smythe family. I haven't verified that.

That does appear to be what it “is”. The Smythe crests I can find with this decapitated leopard imagery seem to only show a solo leopard, no doubles like mine. Since I’ve got double leopard heads and the addition of the lion, perhaps a different family. Or just a less known brand of the Smythe family maybe. Thanks

Do you think it's meant to be these two creatures back to back? (Arms are of Alice Judde, wife of Customer Smythe c. 1532-1593 so a bit early for your item.)

I stand corrected -- I know next to nuttin' about armorial crests, lion rampant means the one standing up. The phrase just stuck in my mind. :D
