Small stone sculpture

Its a sculpture of a monkey, hugging a pot and a pot has embossed flowers.
I am guessing it is from India and the stone to be Rhodonite. I am not sure a stone could be carved like this though(pot). Size is 2.5x4.5"
I would appreciate your views.

It is a typical Chinese soapstone carving, likely a brush pot. Search for "Chinese Soapstone brush pot", you will find many of these...

I searched soapstone before I posted a question. There were similar motiffs but no stone resembled this

 

Most of these (including the one I own which belonged to my grandparents when I was small - 1950's - and possibly much earlier) have a highly polished surface (with the exception of the underside, which looks like yours.) That may account for some of the difference in the appearance of the stone, but certainly not all.

Which picture shows the most accurate color - the first (red/black) or the others (orangey/black)?

 

Soapstone is highly variable in color; but certainly harder stones such as rhodonite can be carved also, and I'd not be surprised if one could find rhodonite brush-pots, though soapstone would be a much more common material.

 

The first photo in my post is most realistic because it has been taken natural sunlight. The underside of this piece has been carved. You can see narrow streaks of carvers tool
