    Hi everyone,

I have this large antique mirror (65x80cm thick beveled glass). It has brown-painted backside with a manufacturer seal saying 1882 P. B. 31 10 with a symbol of a chemist's still (picture attached), is there someone who is knowledgeable in 19th century manufacturers? I am trying to find out who made it and where.

It has a high probability to be French or Belgian (but not 100% certainty).

A google image search has returned 3 other identical seals with only the date changing, all attached to large antique mirrors. No trace of the actual manufacturer's details or full name.

    Thanks a lot! IMG_1797p.jpg IMG_1873p.jpg

Would you please post a photograph of the entire back including frame?

The stamp/symbol obviously relates to the manufacture of the mirror itself. The date may be accurate for the mirror. As for the frame, it strikes me as Southeast Asian. Maybe from Indonesia or India. It may not be original to the mirror.

Yes, it is Indonesian. Probably from East or Central Java.
The mirror itself is probably antique, and it is not from Indonesia.

Victorian homes could be very dark, so mirrors were vital. I'm wondering if the original frame broke and this one fit.

Thank you for your many answers!

@Debora here is a view of the back side, I have remounted the back so I'd rather not have to remove it again... the back paint is very similar (albeit in much cleaner state) to the one you have found on the internet.

The other mirrors I found with the same seal are:

All from French classified ads, so that situates the manufacturer very probably in France. However it doesn't look like it is from Saint Gobain the largest manufacturer then. IMG_1874.jpeg IMG_1874.jpeg

I'm not sure it matters who made the mirror. You have your answer re the frame -- modern and Asian.

For historic reasons I was curious about finding the glass/silvering manufacturer's identity.

To take the investigation a step further, would you be able to tell whether this is a silvered mirror or a tin-mercury amalgam mirror?
