I bought this from an old friend about 35 years ago at a major antique show in Portland, Oregon. He was my senior by about 15 years, an' had retired from a lifetime of collecting, as well as evaluating an' appraising, fine antique items an' silver for major American an' European auction houses. He had nothing ordinary. We became friends due to our shared fascination with the myriad small details that tell so very much about any object, an' that most folks never recognize as significant even if they're noticed.

The handle color suggests it's an unusual alloy; it's so dark an', unlike the vessel itself, shows no indication of having been hammer-wrought. It weighs 4lbs 2oz; height to the rim is 7 1/2", the rim is 4 3/4" diameter, the base is 9" diameter; both are remarkably an' uniformly circular. The base is one piece, inset in the wall 1/4". Other wee details are the turned down lip at the rim, an' the simple chamfer at the edge if the lid an' on the edges of the lid's handle. The lid is very slightly convex, perhaps 5/16" to 3/8".The interior faces of the 5 rivets are very well finished, an' all interior surfaces are tinned. Discoloration of the interior, starting about 3 1/2" below the rim, suggests it was routinely filled to about that level. The staggered brazed seam is dead smooth, an' invisible on the interior.
Posted here mostly for y'all to enjoy...Thanks for lookin'!

It was reliably dated to late 18th-early 19th C England; hence Georgian.
As an aside: my mother was Georgia, as close as spoken English could get to her birth name, Sjoerdtje, in Dutch. She immigrated at 12 from Velsen; then a village, now a suburb of Amsterdam, in 1924...through Ellis Island. RIP.

The wear on the footrim certainly supports that. It is a beauty, thank you for showing us.:)
That is a Frisian name, so she may have had some Frisian ancestry.:)
Velsen is still an independent municipality, some 25 km from Amsterdam.;)

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Velsen

If you look on the map in the link, the green spot by the North Sea coast is Velsen. Amsterdam is further east on the other side of North Holland, close to the inland lake called IJsselmeer (Zuiderzee in your mother's day).

Probably Simon and Marietje. In Dutch the 'i' in Simon is pronounced with an ee sound (much like the original Hebrew Shimon).

I think you're right, AJ...I was going from memory, a fraught undertaking any more.
As AJ suggested, Simon Krap...an' the last name is pronounced Krup, as my alleged memory has it.

He was a Baptist Minister...ran the rescue mission in Stockton, California for many years. He was a humble, decent an' mellow uncle.

Always like these old handmade utilitarian pieces. Born of necessity, the artistry was not forgotten.

Correct. When it comes to the pronunciation of most Dutch vowels, think of how those vowels sound in proper Spanish. The only difference is the 'u', which sounds like the French 'u'.

Dutch also has double vowels, which is where it gets difficult, you get those sounds which only Dutch people can pronounce.;)

My Gal's from that area. Stockton in the early years of the 1849 Goldrush was a very important port- close to Sacramento and San Francisco.
Excellent '72 John Huston movie was shot there-'Fat City'.
