I am curious what the other basket oriented people make of this one. @komokwa, @Potteryplease, @J Dagger, @Taupou

It is very typical for a Navajo/Paiute wedding basket in technique and materials, but certainly not in design. Perhaps just a contemporary version?

Wow-- agree with your observations: materials and technique look totally right, including the 'opening' in the design aligned with the tapered finish on the outer edge. But the design is not any traditional wedding basket design that I'm familiar with.

Interesting idea, but I don't think it applies in this instance.

I snorted at two of the replies here. Well done!

I’ve got more baskets than I have basket knowledge. My first thought was “that’s strange”. No at least I’m not alone there. Where did you find it?

I found it on ebay, described as "Vintage Coiled Basket Bowl Rastafarian Style Handwoven Geometric Design". It was not expensive, and I was curious, so took a chance. Rasta seems apt, except the basket is missing the typical green.

Interesting! Maybe just semi modern experimentation by the weaver. “I wonder what would happen if I did this instead of this” type thing. It’s not unpleasant but after seeing X amount (large) of traditional designs it does leave one feeling strange, like something isn’t right.

Edit: maybe one of them new fangled queer Belgian Indians taking up weaving? Anything is possible! God bless ‘em if so.

So, I did an image search and it returned it as Navajo. I then added Batoro as an additional word. It thanked me for catching that and changed to it being Batoro.

That doesn't seem right, it's not right is it?

No. AI is quite stupid about identifying basketry. It seems to look just at the designs, and cannot distinguish technique or materials. It also accepts and regurgitates the identifications of random ebay or etsy sellers, which are often inaccurate. It also quickly incorporates out discussions here. And yes, I have also had it change its mind when I make a suggestion.
