What is this brass item used for?

    Hi I picked this up at my local thrift shop today. I'm wondering what it was used for? I thought for maybe putting change in but not sure. Also possible age? Any info would be great thanks!

    That was obviously meant to be mounted on a wall, what with the screw holes.I also think its supposed to be a match holder,and its a newer reproduction. I could be wrong though. :)
