This is just a frivolous post to share an amusing piece I found while trolling auction sites. I immediately thought of our esteemed resident "bug" lady. Hope you enjoy it!
Description from auction site- "A square porcelain tray finely painted from the Imperial porcelain factory in Vienna. Hand skated with floral wreath ground Bouquets, rose and gilded, foliage scroll work along edge and handle with cricket motif to center. Date marked 1858 and beehive mark to the underside base." At Live Auctioneers. BTW- does anyone know what hand-skating is? I googled it and all I found were horrific accidents involving fingers. cricket plate.jpg

I don't know about the skating bit, whether term of art or typo, but this sure strikes me as a prank, the very realistic cricket revealed as the food is removed. EEK! @kyratango

Bet someone dictated the description (possibly by phone - or texting) and meant "painted" but it got garbled.

Could be. But person taking it down & person typing it up didn't question? Very lackadaisical, that.

    Worth their job to question.

I had a French Porcelain Fish platter over 26" long that featured insects. It was gorgeous:

The bug in the center of the plate is what your Real Estate agent sees, and calls a "Cricket", when you do a house walk through with them :) - Joe

    I think it's enc-roaching on the design.

I'd like a plate like that. Would hang it on the wall and make the cat crazy (she stared for hours at the nails left on the walls after some pictures were taken down for some wall paint touch-ups) - ;) Joe

Genie Houdini Cat would say "It doesn't smell. It doesn't move. It's not a red dot. Whatever." ...and go back to sleep.
