Who knew. One of our Croatian exchange students gave us a beautiful, heavy, cut glass vase and matching ashtray. We don't smoke, so I used it as a candy dish. Since it was new, I didn't think it would hurt to put it in the dishwasher. It completely disintegrated! Beware. I would never put my antique china or glassware in the dishwasher.

Variations in expansion where the cuts were I suspect. :(

Now that I've gotten it out of the cabinet, I think it's pressed, not cut, but very sharp edges.

Years ago I ruined 4 Meissen dessert plates by putting them in a dishwasher . It was one from the 70s and it literally blasted them to pieces , it was so powerful ! I learned my lesson that very day and haven't had a repeat . As a side note , Id kill to have a dishwasher that powerful again , mine barely does anything ! At least you still have that lovely vase . :)

    Hi Bev,
I hear your pain. I have lost only one thing in the dishwasher. It was a newer Pyrex pitcher. It had gone in the dishwasher for years (like 10 yr). It separated into two pieces top and bottom. My dish washer only washes, I turned off the heated drying cycle that used to cause a haze to my glasses. I have been washing my old old Fiesta for 25 years and never caused a problem. The new (post 86) pieces are starting to craze. I also never use any lemon scented dish detergent. I wash all my Wedgwood Jasperware pieces in the dw. I firmly believe that the lemon and the heat causes most of the problems.

Heat, yes. Lemon, I dunno -- but I never use anything scented with lemon. Or Pine. Or, for that matter, Oxygen. Somehow, I find the idea of mashed potatoes on a lemon-scented dinner plate to be off-putting.

And oxygen nauseates* me. Who knew?! Hope I never have to be revived in the street somewhere...

(Medical people, please note the CORRECT word, 'nauseated,' vs the ubiquitous and infuriating, 'nauseous!' ...She said with a hiss!)

I generally hand wash anything nice. I did have a piece of Pyrex commit suicide once in the dishwasher and never have known why. It wasn't cracked and its twin brother washes that way just fine. Go figure. The lemon stuff sounds...nasty. The newer 80s and later pottery crazes like crazy, to coin a phrase. My 60s Johnson Brothers is just fine, but the 90s Japanese pretty little sauce and dessert plates I picked up for not much? Not so much. I air dry mine and don't use lemon. Rather odd, but then modern pottery is.

My mother has fits about that word usage, too, LOL! Never thought I'd meet another person with the same pet peeve.

Bev, is that glass marked "Indonesia"? It looks similar, and I've heard other people complain that the pressed glass marked Indonesia disintegrates in the dishwasher.

Bev I suspect that the glass was pressed and cut enough to meet US import duties. The pieces similar I have seen were that way. It likely was EU crystal ie 24% lead with a hiccen flaw that expanded or contracted with the heat causing the explosion. Might have happed in a hot dish washing pan. As the Croatian area has a glass industry I would be surprised is a resident would be gifting glass made elswhere.

It was brought from Croatia by our exchange student so I don't know where it originated. I always thought his parents got it there.

I am willing to bet that it is from a Croatian maker. Folks on that area would not send you Chinese glass. The region is proud of their products.

Glass in dishwashers. We ruined a set of Fostoria American Sodas, frosted them the first time we washed them. On the other hand, we've been using Corell (however its spelled) for 35 years and washed it constantly in the dishwasher, it still shines like new. Nothing nice goes in there though.

Doesn't do well for pottery either. My sister took a bunch of vintage Fiesta when my parents passed away. I begged her not to put it in the dishwasher but she doesn't care. I'm afraid to look at it now :nailbiting:

    Hi Marie,
I have been using my old vintage chipped Fiesta in the dishwasher for 25 years now. There is more problems with the new post 86 Fiesta. The secret is NOT to use any lemon or lemon scented dish soap in the washer also do NOT use the drying cycle. Seriously, mine gets washed at least twice a week for years.

When my cousin went into the nursing home, I looked but all her Fiesta had been stolen. The last year of her life she was developing dementia and we didn't know it. She left her door unlocked for 'friends' to come in and bring food, etc. What she never realized was that all her valuables were walking out the door. :(
