Featured What are these little porcelain dishes for?

    Does anyone know what these were used for? My guesses are ashtrays or spoon rests, but WDIK? 4 1/2" long, 2 1/4" wide, 1/2" high, curved opening at one end. One is marked with a gold shield that reads "Villenauxe en Champagne" around the shield and Made in France below.

    Are they from Maxims de Paris? Lots listed as ashtrays/cendrier from there.

    there are some around. "cendrier"... but what item isn't abused as an ashtray in France :).
