Signet Ring Egypt 1960s hallmarks

Hi,

I got this ring from my grandpa who bought it at a street market in Cairo in 1961/62.

There are three stamps next to each other, of which I identified two: Ibis bird and date letter (60s). There's also an additional stamp, I think its the fineness mark but I don't understand what it says.

I'd appreciate your thoughts. Thanks!

Could you put the ring down on a plain background (f.i. piece of white paper) and photograph the marks like that please? On your current photos I see mostly fingers and background and only very tiny marks.

 

Looks like a high carat goodie- Egyptian gold can be 18-21K. American jewelry (14K) always looks rather cheap to me, not that I'd ever turn down free gold.

I see the ibis for gold, but I think the other stamps are simply dirty. You can clean them with a Q-tip dipped in alcohol (not the good stuff).

I think this is probably a 21K mark. This is a 12K mark; just reverse the characters for 21:

 

Welcome, Dom91. Are these actually your grandfather's initials? Interesting that a piece of customized jewellery could be produced by a merchant in a street market. I've never been to the Middle East, so perhaps I underestimate the types of outfits that would have done business there in the '60s, bringing my western idea of how a proper jeweller would have operated. The monogram is all one piece, & in Latin letters, not something an Egyptian would just happen to have on hand, so perhaps Grandpa ordered it & picked it up when ready at the market, but work was done elsewhere. Did he spend much time in Egypt?

I have my Dads Star of David ...which he once told me was a gift from a friend of his....

but...... in 1971 at the Holy Land Hotel gift shop......I was standing next to him , as he bought it......& I bought mine !!!!!!!

So , there's that....

 

Yeah, in his later years my dad's memories of some things were very different from mine, generally making him come off a bit better than he did at the time.
