komokwa The Truth is out there...!

notice the orca on the chinese basket looks like it's sitting on a slab of walrus ivory.
or that may be stone......hard to tell.
What is clear though is that it's meant to rob buyers of their hard earned money, by selling them a fake item.

That's what I thought also. The ones I've seen with the stickers - which of course can be faked - made it appear that the "official" Alaskan crafts board would issue stickers to anyone who attached an Alaskan-looking carving to a purchased import basket.
Buy an Indonesian bone carving, glue it to a Chinese basket.....instant Eskimo basket.

Okay, I'm guilty! But yes, this Chinese basket with the Indonesian bone carving stuck on top was the one that put me over the edge.

At least the Indonesian baskets don't start out as manufactured fakes, it's just when sellers try to pass them off as Indian, Native American, or whatever that the problems start...and quickly compound when other sellers use the internet to "research" their own items.

But assembling two unrelated Chinese and Indonesian items to make a fake Eskimo basket, and the same seller having more than one of such innovative fakes for sale...that's pretty blatant.

But, I guess, so was aiding and abetting the hijacking of this thread, for which I apologize. Such fakes shouldn't even be on the same thread with authentic Hopi kachina dolls. (Although I do feel better! Maybe I should post on the Rants and Raves thread next time.)

    Indeed.

It is really mostly my fault. I admit it. Komo helped.
    I did like the kachinas!

Sometimes things just need to be said. Or posted. I'm glad we have a forum like this where that can happen!

Right now, I'm going off to work on my taxes....

Dear all, just reading this thread, my friends have just purchased kachinas with a view to repatriation. But how to tell if they are fake?
