Featured Robert E Doney Originals

Today at a flea market there was a seller who had a lot of this and that. I bought 12 DVDs, mostly the excellent Warner Archive Collection that hasn't been issued on blu ray yet, two for a dollar. They also had these two huge drawings in absolutely filthy frames. They're each at least 16" x 20". I was expecting the seller want $20 each. I wouldn't have paid that. But, when he said $1 each, I couldn't say no.

This is a self portrait Doney did in 1974 and he had $125 price tag on the back. My thought was, why would anyone want his self portrait? This is a charcoal drawing.

This one is a watercolor titled "White Clown" and it was entered in a contest with a price tag of $485.

It's a dying flea market. But, these were a neat find.

 

He had a number of grandchildren. Surprised it didn't stay in the family.

How do we know that the artist priced the portrait himself?

Right. Maybe the family had a liquidation sale after he passed or some such.

We had an artist in our family back in the day and I was told later in life that family tossed his paintings in the trash. Not implying he was a prolific artist. He was actually a Monsignor in the Catholic church, but had formal instruction.

 

It's his handwriting on the back. There's a form attached to the clown that he filled out also.

He died in 2012. This is probably another relative that passed. Or maybe someone did buy these and they died. Though the condition of the frames and glass, maybe they were in storage for over a decade.

That's such a shame his art was thrown away. I can't throw anything away.
