Featured 80 year old card game book

I had this well-thumbed paperback since I was a kid in the mid-1950s (although the book was first published in 1946).

 

An' nary a 'phone nor a TV in sight!
Them were th' days...sigh.

Yes, but a group of children playing cards. That's just crazy.

 

Each of us used cards to build a strong fort, and then we took turns bombing each other by lobbing a penny. That was fun.

 

Cool game Deb & great memory Davey ! I was just thinking about the 'Dick & Jane' books last week- the illustration reminds me of those books.
For those outside the US-these were our basic early reading primers in elementary/primary school.

These days you'd wonder what the parents were smoking, putting their boys in short pants during the Winter ... or at all. You'd also wonder about the Ritalin dose they were using.

We played Crazy 8s, Fish, War, and eventually, Uno. I was very lucky.

 

I started collecting decks of cards when I was a kid. Now I have over 700 decks. Some are collectibles because they are from businesses no longer in existence like PanAm Airlines. Others are novelty decks like where the suit colors are reversed (spades and clubs are red, heart and diamonds are black), oddly shaped decks (round, zigzag), or of historic interest (depicting the 1955 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winners). Right now they are all packed up in boxes in the basement.

My aunts and I plus my brothers used to play cards with my grandfather and his sisters. A good time was had by all. Life was simpler with cards.

I have a few packs of unopened cards here. Tried to sell em but they did not move.
