Good point. I had assumed they were dessert or salad plates. I never thought of card or pin dishes.

I suppose if you saw only a single example a non-food use would seem most probable. Looks like having a set is a rarity.

Indeed. Having four would suggest dessert or fruit dishes/plates - here is a Wedgwood fruit set with 7" round plates, from Marks' 'Majolica Pottery' (1983):

And an unidentified pin tray from the same book:

Wonder whether the book also identifies the square as a pin tray because they were not aware of its coming in sets.

I have to say, I never stop marveling at the range & variety of the lines & items Wedgwood has produced over the years.

The red numbers are the pattern. M is for majolica. The only reference I've seen mentioned that lists patterns is Victoria Bergesen's book Majolica.

I've learned that there was also a bowl in this pattern (Bouquet) and they were salad dishes.

Would you happen to have the page number from the book? I wonder if there's a pattern number, date, or photos of the complete service. Can't thank you enough for your help. These plates have been driving me crazy!

Late to the party as usual. At first glance I thought it was majolica. I didn't know that the impressed "M" meant majolica so thanks for that tidbit!

This was an auction for the bowl, they dated theirs as 1871

A Wedgwood square Majolica Bowl, date code letters for 1871. Decorated with moulded baskets of flowers, repeated on four sides, with rope twist top and bottom rims, and scrolled corners. A super display piece, in excellent condition, free of any chips, cracks or restoration. There is some fine age related glaze crazing only visible on close inspection. Imprinted Wedgwood to base, date code as mentioned above, also red painted W2915, and initials CH. Size approx 25cm square, depth 9cm.

I don't know about the impressed M; I was referring to the red ink M above the pattern number.

No, I don't own the book. Wherever I was reading about it, and I've googled so much I forgot, said it's short on pictures but useful because of pattern lists. I doubt if every pattern is in there! Besides, you have the pattern number and date now.

Many many thanks to everyone for your generous time and feedback. I really went back and forth with these plates, picking them up because they were Wedgwood, then thinking they were fake Wedgwood, then rethinking that and finding more resources. As mentioned above, the beauty and range of items from this brand is incredible. I feel very honored to have found these wonderful plates.

I really went back and forth with these plates, picking them up because they were Wedgwood, then thinking they were fake, then doing more research, then finding some answers...definitely worth it though. As said above, it's amazing the breadth of designs and items from this maker.
