Impressionistic painting-thoughts please

Hi all, I really like this painting. Is it impressionistic? Is it perhaps mid-century? Not sure oil and pastel? Mixed medium?

I read the signature as M. Starck. Do you agree? Any other suggestions? The frame size is 60x67cm. Many thanks for any help.

Glaser...or Glaren ? , for the siggy?

a woman standing behind a wall , listening to folks around a table.......?

I can't really tell what I'm seeing , more than that.....

Pastell crayon..., maybe..?

not really my jam...

 

I see "M. Glaser". It is painted on masonite or just backed by a masonite panel?

Thanks for the comments and suggestions Komo,I will also search Glaser and Glaren then. Also not entirely sure about the scene. For me the figure with the top hat is most interesting and a focal point. I also now thinking maybe is was re-framed (but not sure)

 

Thanks Debora. Appreciate it. So another vote for M Glaser. It’s painted directly on the masonite. When did they
start to paint on masonite 1930’s -1940’s or so? (I read) I was thinking the painting itself might be older than the frame?

 

Agree with the above, pastel on masonite.

Kruger's ghost? Rather rude to keep his hat on though.

 

Masonite began to be mass produced in 1929. So into the 20th century, despite the long skirts and top hats.

Is that fountain pen or ball point pen? And isn't there an impressed mark on the frame's right?

I assumed that the painting depicts men around a table playing cards, like poker or other serious game. There is almost always a woman in the background who fetches food and drinks to the table.

 

The writing on the back of the frame is in pencil. There’s no impressed mark. What is that word is it ‘Caysen’ or Cayser? Is the first letter a old style fancy ‘C’’?

There's a woman at the end of the table in a blue dress. And I read the name -- in pencil -- on the back as Cayzer which, I believe, is a well known name in South Africa.

Marcus Glaser a South African artist may be a possibility.Signature appears quiet similar.
