Featured Here we go again- what did I buy for $1?

This is extremely lightweight. Is bakelite heavier? Is there a bakelite that is coated? Could be resin. I have to flash a UV light on it tonight. Would all bakelite react to a simichrome test? Thanks. I had a similar piece years ago that I let go because I thought it was resin, still regret it. The beads do not look uniform to me.

Thank you. I have cardiac conditions that prevent me from being outside in this New Jersey heat and humidity. It's a bummer, but niw is my fun time!

I was sick all Summer too, but fortunately/unfortunately sales die dead here in July and August.

The necklace looks like prystal - the clear version of bakelite. It's red, so may not react to much of anything. Red's a crapshoot like that. I can't say about simichrome, but I've used the baking soda test on prystal and it worked. The barrel clasp on yours is pure 1930s, if that helps. Another easy clue - if the facets don't match perfectly from bead to bead, the odds for bakelite go up. I've never seen amber faceted, but have more than one string of the bakelite beads and they all are.

 

Could hot water test work you think?

 

Maybe amber, which is occasionally facet cut. The clasp is not your typical amber necklace clasp, but who knows. I look forward to the result of the UV test.

 

Could do, if Marko puts it in a plastic bag first, just to be careful. Simply rubbing it sometimes works too, if you have a good sense of smell.

These look restrung on nylon if they're bakelite. The cotton likely died of old age, and it may have been shortened, thus explaining the clasp too. If that's nylon and you put the necklace in a sealed ziplock, it could work.
