Crappy pictures, but maybe someone recognizes the pattern or the markings. The only thing on the back was a stamped R and a number 4, not together.

Those are likely to be codes for the manufacturer. Maybe for model and size.
Bakersgma would probably have known whodunnit.

I miss her too, she was my friend for many years, and she knew American silverplate so well...

Unfortunately, despite a description, the marks are completely illegible for me, can't say whether silver or plated, nor country of origin, though personally, I doubt American, seems more likely to be European - clear close-ups of the marks would be helpful.

They were at a flea market. It's just an R in a squarish stamp and then a 4 in an ovalish stamp. Nothing more. Nothing fancy. I was thinking French possibly with a little bit of looking around, but who knows. Hate to pay $15 for what are probably a few silver plate spoons, but I might get them if they are still there this weekend.

Similar pattern at left, as 'Standard' in a 1949 Danish silver manufacturers' catalog - without further identification, yours could still be silver or plate, from another country and even a century older...

Should mention that if one mark is a '4' it may indicate the grams of silver used in plating, though I'd expect to see it on a larger single piece rather than small spoons. Here's a '4G' on a French plated white metal ladle:
