She reminds me a little of Lil BoPeep but she is missing her staff. The painting of the eyes looks like she is vintage but the bottom looks very clean for her to have been kicking around for a long time. They also remind me of German-style eyes but that is a wild guess. Do the openings in her skirt mean she is meant for light to show through? What is she? Approx 9"

Any help is very much appreciated I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season!

I think she's a napkin holder for the table. Napkins are folded and slipped into slots. Very cute.

I think you got it, but I'm kind of sad that such a thing exists.

    Why is it sad?

Because the world where you would take the time to fold napkins and put them in a pretty holder no longer exists.

I still fold napkins. I don't have a holder like this. Hmm. Do I need to collect one more thing? Nah.
    Well, maybe...

That is so true and I agree with you.
However, not sure that is what Janet meant. She said
Meaning is was even made. Not sure why though.

For special occasions, I still use cloth napkins, ironed damp and lightly starched. Maybe I'm too fussy but I want my family to know that niceties like fine china, silver, and linens exist and are collected for a reason. In a world where caps on and phones out at the dining table have become an accepted norm, I still insist on civility.
Maybe after I'm gone, the kids will have a good laugh about what a dinosaur grandma was.:arghh:

    Hi Sandra,
You are preaching to the choir in me. The caps on at the table drive me nuts. Caps even in the house do the same UNLESS you are Orthodox Jews. I can not stand paper plates in my house either. I have to accept them in others tho.

Maybe that someone would be prepared to take the time to push napkins in the slots, but not to set the table properly with individual napkins by each plate etc.
I first saw one of these here, on Antiquers, and it boggled my mind. Is it really so much more trouble to give each guest some attention by setting individual places for them?
I know, I'm very old-fashioned in certain things.

To me, it falls into the same category as toothpick holders as part of a table setting. Some things should be done in private, away from the table.

Most of the ads I found for these were from the 1950's. Here is a 1955 ad for them, followed by another suggested use for you... :)

Confession is good for the soul: I intensely dislike cutesy knickknacks, and I don't understand having a pottery holder for 12 napkins when you can stack 100 in the same amount of space.

    Hi JanetJohn,
A hundred of my cloth napkins would reach 10 or 12 FT.:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:. I do not have as many guests as I used to most of them have passed on. I think the last time we had a dozen people for dinner was two years ago.

I kinda like the cutesy stuff. We had a cow creamer that my mother put on the table for all the holidays for coffee and dessert to use for milk. I always thought it was nifty.
