    Thanks for the replies. Natural or dyed?
    I was reading that if dipped in milk it should turn it red. Not happening here.

    Natural - that kind of consistent colour can't be replicated by dying. And it would have coloured the barnacle.

    I am very fond of sea beasties. I did an Advanced Marine Zoology course years back, which was utterly fascinating. I can still recite the life cycle of the dog whelk.
