I think 20s or 30s. That whole sort of Japonesque Deco feel.

I think it is more 1960s or later.

The design on front was produced by acid etching.

I think it looks more like off a rolling mill.

You can etch straight rows of perfect dots/circles that appear to be maybe .5mm in diameter on the background of the piece?

Gosh, never tried that particular pattern, but if the reward was there, I’d probably get it done. Don’t have time to research the limits of acid etching, but I was really surprised at the capability when I was using ferric chloride on brass. Anything I could paint, print, or otherwise effectively mask off on the brass could make a sharp pattern if you played around with the time, temperature, agitation, pH, post-etch process, etc. until it worked. That’s why zillions of complex printed circuits were made using ferric chloride etching. But since I wasn’t there when this object was embellished I can’t say for sure how it was done-etching is my opinion. If it was made during the past couple of decades, laser engraving would have been the most certain way, but I’m not sure we’d all agree on what year it was made, either.

this was from a very old estate. The lady was homebound since1950 and died in 1970. She lived with her mom and grand mom born in the 1800's. It is not possible that it is current. It has to be older than 1940. Her husband was a Tea salesman who worked for Tetley . I don't know if that's where the Asian influence came from, or it was gifted to him somehow.

The two oval goldish objects at the top look like applique, probably soldered on.

I keep coming back to look and am still not convinced this is either Japanese or Chinese. I know this is going to sound strange, but I get a greater similarity to Egyptian styling. Particularly the plant-like images and some of the birds.

It has intrigued me...I have run the Egyptian theme too in my head...a lot of that in the early 1900's...Anyone have an idea of worth? is this brass?
