Japanese painted tiles

    Is there a reason why you didn't post photographs of the full tile with frame from both the front and back? That would have been more helpful.

    Interesting crackle happening within the image. Looks like decals to me. There was a craze for decal decoration around the 1870s (decalcomania). Apart from knowing it happened, I am unaware of ever handling anything that fits the fad. It's possible that these are that old, but they could be much more recent.
